About Pre-Planning

Filling out an advance directive will help keep you in charge of decisions about your medical treatment when you are no longer able to make those decions. A living will informs your medical team and your family about your choices regarding what medical treatmens you want to recieve and which you want to refuse and under what situations.  A health-care power of attorney appoints your choice of person (usually a close relative or friend) to make health-care decisions for you when you can't make them for yourself.

 

Making these plans while you are still healthy not only guarantees that your choices are honored, it is also a gift to your loved ones.  At a time when stress and grief are high, having to guess your wishes often ends in family feeling guilt, being uncertain as to what is the "right" decision and leads to argument between family members with differing ideas of how to proceed.  Pre-planning shows compassion for your loved ones in making a difficult time as easy as it can be in a hard situation.
